Education
The purpose of the curriculum is to advance the students as much as possible in the various fields of study, to give them maximum independence and self-management skills. An individual curriculum is built for each student that relies on his abilities in the academic and rehabilitative fields on the one hand and on the aspiration to advance towards attainable goals, on the other hand. The personal goals formulated in consultation between the staff, the student and his family. The program emphasizes the important goals for the advancement of the student, and they are integrated throughout the day in class and in individual work. Evaluations of the student's progress take place in the middle of the school year and at the end of the year and are reported to the student and parents in the mid-term and end-of-year certificates.
The educational staff at the Ilanot school includes special education teachers specializing in special education, assistants, and national service girls. The educational team works in full cooperation with the emotional team and the health professions team. In addition, the school has teachers who specialize in the field of visual impairments. Each class has a teacher, an aid team and a team from the field of medical field; as well as an escort, a counselor, a social worker and a psychologist.
The core subjects are taught in accordance with the curriculum of the Ministry of Education (Hebrew, math, homeland/geography, science, literature, English, and in the senior classes, citizenship and history) with adaptations for special education and accessibility according to the needs of the students and with the aim of preparing the students for adult life in the community.
Learning takes place in small groups and individually. The educational outline is divided into three age groups - young, intermediate and mature and refers to three levels of functioning.
Life Skills
Ilanot School believes that every student, with and despite the limitation, has the right to self-management, choice and influence on his life and his environment, according to his ability. Self-management is the student's ability to act to achieve personal goals or tasks. He is required to identify the goal or task and understand what are the steps he must take in order to achieve it. It is required For managerial abilities of: planning, thinking, desire, initiative, emotion regulation, impulse control and self-motivation. Ilanot School works to promote these abilities of the student, of the class as a group and through dedicated training for the school staff.
“Telem”: Learning Outside the Box
Telem is a unique program created for the oldest students at Ilanot, ages 18 to 21, designed to ease the transition from school to the greater community. Telem teaches and reinforces skills necessary for a quality independent life after graduation, according to each student's abilities and individual choices. The program combines theoretical studies with experience in the community, such as employment, national service, military service or higher education. The program staff team accompanies and prepares its participants for these various frameworks in the classroom and then out into the field to implement what they have learned. Emphasis is placed on the social group and the emotional support for the program participants so that they can be and feel successful. Telem students also enjoy all of Ilanot’s resources, such as paramedical therapy sessions, emotional therapy support, therapeutic swim, and more.
CVI (Cortical Visual Impairment)
The Ilanot School has a special relationship with the renowned Perkins School for the Blind, located in Boston, Massachusetts- a world leader in research and development of teaching strategies for children and adults with cortical visual impairment/cerebral blindness (CVI). Ilanot has a CVI staff team made up of therapists and teachers who have undergone advanced professional training on CVI through Perkins. This team, with the guidance of representatives from the Perkins School, works towards improving the development of functional visual skills of students with CVI at Ilanot. They focus on adjusting the classroom environment and learning materials for each student as well as providing professional guidance and direction to the classroom staff.
